Known issues with Sony Reader, NOOK GlowLight Plus, and Adobe Digital Editions

OverDrive recently upgraded more of our services to HTTPS as part of our continued commitment to security and privacy. While this process was seamless and invisible to the vast majority of users, it resulted in compatibility issues for some older devices and software versions. We apologize for the inconvenience, and have provided solutions and alternatives below (wherever possible).

Sony Reader WiFi
Sony Reader WiFi devices no longer allow users to download eBooks directly on the device. Users can still download library eBooks to the Sony Reader software on their computer, then transfer eBooks from their computer to their Sony Reader.

NOOK GlowLight Plus
Users cannot currently open library eBooks that they've transferred to the NOOK GlowLight Plus. Barnes & Noble is aware of this problem and working on a fix, which should be released in a future device software update.

Adobe Digital Editions (ADE)
Some users have had problems downloading eBooks using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) 2.0 or below. As a solution, we recommend always using the latest version of ADE (currently version 4.5). Some Windows XP users have continued to experience issues after upgrading ADE, so they may still have difficulty downloading library eBooks. Microsoft discontinued support for XP in 2014, and unfortunately there is no solution for these users at this time.

New Copier, Summer Reading, Reference Weeding

The new copier has handy instructions next to it, thanks to Hope. We are still dealing with the issue of patrons accidentally printing 11 x 14 paper. Pam has emailed the information booklet to everyone.

Please refer any adults who are interested in logging their summer reading hours to Abby or Gretchen. The next event is Monday 6/27 here at HQ. Please refer to to Abby or Gretchen with any questions or inquiries.

Notices have been placed on all the Reference shelves stating to leave pulled reference books on top so they can be noted for circulation. Eventually we will be downsizing the print reference collection and moving towards e-reference sources. Abby will take care of the reference shelving, though please feel free to notify her when there are materials to be shelved.

alerts will simply tell you when and where the title is available to
download.

To promote the launch of the SYNC program this week’s Professional
Book Nerds Podcast is all about audiobooks as well. You can subscribe to
our podcast on iTunes, on Android devices, or you can listen to it directly in your browser.

listening. The program is sponsored by AudioFile Magazine and titles are
delivered through the OverDrive app. Download the app in advance to
whichever device you anticipate listening on and be ready to go!

Late fees, Stories of Flint, and twitter-baiting J.K. Rowling

Some food for thought on a common problem:

Late fines pushing low-income patrons away from the library:  "Now, she no longer borrows books and is teaching her daughter not to borrow, either. “I try to explain to her: ‘Don’t take books out. It’s so expensive,’ ” she said."

Librarians have tried many different approaches to the problem,   "Over the years, libraries have fined patrons for not bringing back books and offered no-questions-asked return periods. They’ve published the names of book scofflaws in local newspapers. They’ve paid personal calls on people who hold onto books past their due dates, and even sicced the police on particularly recalcitrant readers."

Storytelling for Posterity:

Now when the kids of future generations in Flint, Michigan ask "What was it like to live through the water crisis" they will have an whole archive of people's stories: "The Flint Public Library is opening its recording studio for residents to tell their experience of living with poisoned water. The library is partnered with StoryCorps, a spoken-story archiving organization. The interviews are done in a conversational style, and the group will archive the recordings. With the storyteller's permission, StoryCorps will also send the story to the Library of Congress."

Best use of social media by a library: Apparently JK Rowling was lured to a library book club with lemon cake.

Because of a recent update with IOS,  the Overdrive App may break for some users. These are some troubleshooting tips that you can use to help the user.

For the device that is having trouble:
1.            Go to your device's Settings and Clear History and Cookies and Data. Or, if those options aren't available, tap Safari, then Clear Cache.

5.            Note an Adobe ID or OverDrive account is being used and the email associated
6.            Press "Deauthorize" (continue through prompt)
7.            Press "Authorize" (Use the Adobe ID or OverDrive account that was previously noted)
8.            Attempt to download title again

Or, with a new Adobe ID
If you don't want to create a new OverDrive account to authorize the app, you can create a new Adobe ID instead.

2.            Deauthorize the app on your device.
o             Open the Home menu by tapping the icon in the top-left corner of the app.
