Friends of RPL Annual Fall Book Sale

Fall Booksale is here! Be sure to promote the book sale to customers that purchase from the 2nd floor book sale. Friday, October 26th - Monday, October 29th.

West Fest

We are counting down the days to West Fest in Cleveland, NC. Be sure to mark your calendar and bring some friends to Cleveland to celebrate the new West Branch library scheduled to open in 2019. We are excited and hope everyone will be able to attend on Saturday, October 13th.

MANHATTAN SHORT Film Viewing

Your invited! Please RSVP to let Gretchen know you will be attending the staff viewing on Thursday, September 27th at 6:30pm. There will be a snacking session with items for sale. All proceeds will go to the Benevolence Committee. If you miss the staff viewing, please join us during our other public showing. 

Re-shelving Area on 2nd Floor

See a book lying on a shelf out of place during your walk around? Help keep our floor tidy and place these lingering materials on the shelves located near the end of the Biography section over by the elevator. Our dedicated Page staff will make sure these items are returned to their proper location.

Newspaper Missing

Help spot the newspaper grabber! We are missing a few newspapers. If at anytime you see one is missing please ask Ruth or the librarian in charge to investigate.

Specifically, the Salisbury Post is quite valuable. There should always be two current copies on display at the newspaper shelf.

Shifting Nonfiction

What!! Have you heard? The nonfiction books are being shifted to reduce crowding in tight areas. Over the next few months you will notice books are sliding down a few shelves.

Relocation of Reference Materials

All Reference materials are now housed on shelves between study rooms 1 and 2. In the Reference area you will find regional phone books, current government documents for public viewing, and Value Line. Stop by to browse the collection anytime.

Team Sanitation

Please feel free to help sanitize the second floor near closing in the evenings to help keep our furniture and seating areas sanitary. Consider patrons and be mindful to not disturb or alarm them if you decide to clean. There are several supplies available near the refrigerator at the Information Desk.

If you see something that requires an investigation, please consult the librarian on duty.

Wireless Printing Tip

Got someone standing in line waiting on a print job at the wireless printer?  To help the printer recoginze the print job faster please ask or assist the patron to convert the file to a PDF.

*NEW* Winter Book Sale

Well it seems our book collections are growing and we are making room for new items. There is good chance the library will host a January book sale. Edward will be leading this project and he will be needing our help to promote this event.

Changes Are Coming for the IRS Form 1040

The New York Times has released an article that shares insight to the new and updated 2019 IRS 1040 form. The form is being reduced from 2 pages to a short "postcard" format.

 Can't Find a book on the shelf? Here is what you should do next.

1. Locate a Missing Material slip at the desk
2. Fill out in the appropriate areas
3. Return completed slip to Circulation desk 
4. If you need help just ask! Circulation and Reference staff are very helpful.

Updating Reference

Our Reference collection is currently being weeded extensively across all three branches. As the librarian managing the Reference collection, I have a goal to update the collection to include resources that are current and a reflection our community and library users. It is important to me that we offer local and regional resources that may be of interest to the general public that visits our libraries.

As most staff probably are aware, our Reference areas are rarely referred to in the library by staff or our users. Many patrons visit the library to physically check out books to take home and read or are searching for e-resources.

After many considerations, I have decided to weed many titles and volumes due to lack of use and being outdated resources. Within the next few months you may a see big difference in the number of items remaining in our Reference collection at all three branches.

I am open to any suggestions or feedback regarding our Reference collection. Please contact Amber with any concerns at amber.covington@rowancountync.gov.

GAR- Great American Read

We have all heard by now the words "Great American Read." Our library is participating in this national effort to get families reading. All across the US, people are racing to read up to 100 books to choose their favorite as the winner. PBS and UNC-TV have partnered together to offer this opportunity for people across the country to read and passionately discuss books.

Upcoming Summer Reading Programs

Get set, ready, and begin recording your books on READsquared! All staff are encouraged to participate during Summer Reading. Get your entire family involved and spend time together reading. There will be weekly programs for youth ages birth to 12th grades.

Feel free to enjoy yourself at the Adult programs scheduled during the summer. Line and swing dancing will be taught by local dance instructors. If you like guitars or are interested in learning how to play, come on out and start picking during our "Guitar Instruction" program with Eric Upton from the Oasis School of Music in China Grove.

All Bluegrass lovers will enjoy a presentation by local musician Vivian Hopkins of Gold Hill. She is currently the president of the North Carolina Bluegrass Association and has a huge following of listeners across the state.

These are just a few things happening at the library soon! Be sure to join in and get ready to ROCK!
