Free tutoring for kids resource

Communities in Schools is a nonprofit that provides access to free volunteer tutors for elementary, middle and high school students. They also provide school supplies and and a weekend food program. As we know many tutors use the library to assist kids, but those are professional tutors who charge. This program is free and conducted in the schools and parents can call and request services.

RCCC's Employability Lab over the summer

For the summer, the Employability Lab has a series of Wednesday workshops, and then Rebecca will meet one on one with job seekers Fridays from 9:30AM to Noon.

She is no longer here on Monday mornings.

There are small handouts for job seekers at the reference desk and also on the Bulletin Board with the dates and times of the workshops. If you see folks working on resumes or who need help with online applications please make sure they get one of these handouts.

Any questions, just ask Abby.

Helping Computer Newbies

Often we will have individuals who would like to use the computer lab and they have limited or no experience. We have some updated pages for assisting people with little to no experience in setting up an email address and very basic Microsoft Word instruction. These are saved in the HQ Computer Lab folder in Commons under Instruction & Signs. There are hard copies printed out and stored in a blue folder at the Reference Desk at HQ.

These are a work in progress, so if anyone has suggestions please let Abby know.

Tech Stops, Employability Lab- What you need to know

When a patron requests technology assistance that will require more than a few minutes of your time, you must decide if this will compromise your ability to competently staff the reference desk. If you feel it would monopolize your time to the detriment of the patrons, please inform them of our Technology Quick-Stops.

We are not currently offering scheduled technology classes, so if a patron inquires or expresses a desire for instruction, please refer them to Abby. If unavailable, get their contact information. Depending on what their needs are Abby will coordinate with the most qualified and knowledgeable staff member to arrange for a instructional session for the patron at their convenience.

As you may have noticed, RCCC's Employability Lab has a standing reservation for Conference Room 4 on Mondays and Fridays from 9:30AM to noon. Should a patron ask for resume or job-seeking assistance please make sure they are aware of this opportunity. No appointment is required and walk-ins are welcome.

Known issues with Sony Reader, NOOK GlowLight Plus, and Adobe Digital Editions

OverDrive recently upgraded more of our services to HTTPS as part of our continued commitment to security and privacy. While this process was seamless and invisible to the vast majority of users, it resulted in compatibility issues for some older devices and software versions. We apologize for the inconvenience, and have provided solutions and alternatives below (wherever possible).

Sony Reader WiFi
Sony Reader WiFi devices no longer allow users to download eBooks directly on the device. Users can still download library eBooks to the Sony Reader software on their computer, then transfer eBooks from their computer to their Sony Reader.

NOOK GlowLight Plus
Users cannot currently open library eBooks that they've transferred to the NOOK GlowLight Plus. Barnes & Noble is aware of this problem and working on a fix, which should be released in a future device software update.

Adobe Digital Editions (ADE)
Some users have had problems downloading eBooks using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) 2.0 or below. As a solution, we recommend always using the latest version of ADE (currently version 4.5). Some Windows XP users have continued to experience issues after upgrading ADE, so they may still have difficulty downloading library eBooks. Microsoft discontinued support for XP in 2014, and unfortunately there is no solution for these users at this time.
