We have most of the NC Building Codes in hard copy at HQ (minus the ones that have walked off), but we also have access to the codes online.  Edward has added a link under Online Tools > Government > North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal.

resource of the week: hoover's

It doesn't sound particularly interesting, but Hoover's is a great resource for the small business entrepreneur looking up industry in our area; the job seeker looking up company profiles to be prepared for interviews), and even for the home buyer who wants to get an idea of his or her future location.  You can search for companies by zip code, and then sort by number of employees, revenue, and more.

make two-sided copies

Sometimes we get a little flummoxed when patrons need help making double-sided copies.  To make a two-sided copy of a two-sided original, choose the "2 to 2 Sided" option (orange above).  If you ever need extra help, Chapter 4 (pg. 64) of the Quick User Reference has everything you could ever want to know about making copies on our machine (at HQ).

printing library card numbers

If you have bad handwriting or are just plain excited about learning new tricks, read on!  The following is a step-by-step tutorial on how to look up a patron's library card number and print it on a receipt (like the guest passes do).  It may seem cumbersome, but once you set your font and printer settings, it's quick and easy.  Thanks for sharing your trick with us, Edward!

Step 1: Look up patron

Step 2:  Copy his/her card number

Step 3: Open Notepad

Step 4: Paste and format card number

Step 5: Choose printer and print

new search box feature

Someone was asking about how to convert a file from .ODT to .DOC today.  I knew I had done a blog post about it, but when I went to refer them to the post, I realized just how tricky it was to find it.  So...  I have added a search box in the top right corner of each blog.  Rather than trying to remember, "Was it October?  No.  Maybe November?" or trying to figure out the label name, you can now plug in a few keywords ("file conversion", for example) and it'll take you right to the post.  Happy hunting!

resource of the week: small engine repair

We often have patrons who inquire about lawn mower or tractor repair manuals.  Meet Small Engine Repair Reference Center, your one-stop shop for repair information on ATVs, generators, boat motors, motorcycles, lawn mowers, tractors, and more.  EBSCO has a step-by-step help sheet detailing how to use this resource.
